MASCC/ISOO 2021

After three non-stop days of fascinating presentations, interesting discussions, catching up with colleagues, and even a sing-a-long over Zoom, another MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting has come to a close!

Thank you to everyone who joined us: our speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, e-poster presenters, and of course our attendees! Over 900 people registered for the live meeting, and although we had to adapt to a new format this year, it was wonderful to be able to bring everyone together from across the globe.

Don’t forget that all of the presentations are now available to watch on demand until September 17: a great chance to catch up on those sessions that may have happened outside of your time zone.

If you aren’t already registered, but would like access to the on-demand content, you can still register until September 8.

We’d like to extend a special congratulations to all of our 2020 & 2021 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting Awards and Scholarship Recipients. More information about each of the winners is available here:
2020 Award & Scholarship Recipients
2021 Award & Scholarship Recipients

Finally, a sincere thank you once again to our sponsors and exhibitors: Helsinn, Baxter, Kyowa Kirin, Paxman, Accord, and SBOC. You can learn more about each of these organizations and the important work they’re doing in supportive care here: 2021 Support & Exhibition.

For any further questions about the meeting, please email us at mascc.office@mascc.org.

The next MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting will be held in Toronto, Canada from June 23 - 25, 2022. Visit our website to learn more about the themes of the next meeting, and stay tuned for more information to come: https://www.mascc.org/2022-annual-meeting

Join the new Working Group on patient-reported symptom monitoring

Our Oncodermatology Study Group is excited to announce the creation of a new Working Group on patient-reported symptom monitoring led by Dr Iris Walraven and Dr Corina van den Hurk.

Following the excellent results of the randomized trial from Ethan Basch, there are currently many initiatives to monitor patient-reported symptoms during and after treatment. However, there is currently no international consensus on core symptom subsets and comparable methods to monitor these symptoms during and after treatment. This currently leads to a variety of initiatives and everyone ‘reinventing the wheel’. Furthermore, all the excellent data gathered might not be comparable to use in studies.

The main goal of this working group is therefore to reach international consensus on core subsets to monitor patient-reported symptoms during and after treatment. Secondary aims are to create sustainable research collaborations in which we can pool patient-reported symptom data and create novel statistical models to predict symptom worsening during and after treatment.

If you would like to join the Working Group, please get in touch with Iris Walraven at iris.walraven@radboudumc.nl. Members from all Study Groups are welcome to participate!

European Cancer Summit 2021

On behalf of our partner, the European Cancer Organisation (E.C.O.) and MASCC President Dr Andrew Davies, we invite you to join us at the European Cancer Summit 2021, taking place on November 17 & 18 in Brussels and virtually. This year’s Summit will bring together leading oncology experts, patient advocates, politicians and policy-makers to discuss the main issues impacting cancer policy, for the benefit of cancer patients, healthcare professionals and all people across Europe.  More information about the program, speakers, and registration is available here https://www.europeancancer.org/summit.

Please note that if you register before September 17 you can benefit from a 50% discount, and we are pleased to confirm that a Special Member Society Rate applies for all MASCC Members.

We also have a very limited number of FREE virtual registration places available to MASCC members located in Europe. If you’re interested in claiming one of these places, please click here. Tickets will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

 Editor’s Pick

Throughout the year, we will share articles from the MASCC journal Supportive Care in Cancer. The “Editor’s Pick” section, chosen by the journal’s Editor-In-Chief, Dr Fred Ashbury, PhD, will cover a variety of topics to meet the many interests of our membership.

This month we feature:

Position statement on cancer nursing’s potential to reduce the growing burden of cancer across the world

There is substantial unrealized potential for nurses to reduce the burden of cancer across the world. In low- and middle-income countries, there is an opportunity for government and non-government organizations to improve the working conditions of nurses, such as low pay, workforce shortages, and a lack of opportunities for professional growth. In many high-resource countries, while specialized cancer nursing roles have developed over many decades and there is a strong evidence base to support them, there is substantial variation in access to such services and regulatory, system level and professional barriers which limit service delivery.
