Mellar Davis Awarded 2023 MASCC Distinguished Service Award

Mellar Davis

Congratulations to Dr Mellar Davis, the recipient of the 2023 MASCC Distinguished Service Award (MASCC’s highest honor). This award recognizes meritorious service, exemplary leadership and outstanding contribution to the society and its mission.

Dr Davis is a long-standing active member of MASCC and served twice on the MASCC board. He is currently the chair of the Cancer Pain Subgroup, and formerly led the Palliative Care Study Group from 2008 – 2014. As well as serving as an editorial consultant for Supportive Care in Cancer from 2007 on, Dr Davis has also chaired sessions, organized workshops, and participated in virtually every MASCC meeting since 2004.

Among his accomplishments at MASCC, he has been instrumental in the development of numerous MASCC guidelines, including those on nausea and vomiting in advanced disease, nausea and vomiting in malignant bowel obstruction, and three guidelines on the role of cannabinoids in supportive care.

Dr Davis is currently Professor of Palliative Medicine at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and has published over 350 articles, 8 books, 99 book chapters, and presented almost 300 posters and other presentations.

A quietly diligent, productive, and supportive member of the MASCC community, Dr Davis has been an excellent mentor and role model for junior colleagues, as well as a supportive colleague and leader in the community. He is a very well-deserving recipient of this award.
