Ian Olver, AM, MD, PhD has been a MASCC member since 2004, initially participating in several iterations of the Antiemetic Study Group guidelines. He served on the MASCC Board for 10 years including in the role of Treasurer and served as President from 2016-2018. He chaired the Publications Committee 2008-2016 and the Nominations Committee 2020-2021 and sits on the Governance and Nominations Committee from 2021. He co-chaired the 2016 Adelaide MASCC meeting and chairs the Committee of the 2023 MASCC/JASCC meeting in Japan. He was editor of the 1st and 2nd editions of the MASCC Textbook of Cancer Supportive Care and Survivorship and wrote the History of the 10 years of MASCC between the 20th and 30th year.
Ian is a medical oncologist, cancer researcher and bioethicist. He is currently Professorial Research Fellow, School of Psychology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Adelaide and consults for Bellberry Ethics Committee. His previous roles have included being CEO, Cancer Council Australia where he was awarded their gold medal in 2014, and Clinical Director, Royal Adelaide Hospital Cancer Centre. He sat on the Australian Health Ethics Committee for 9 years, chairing it for 6 and was awarded the biennial NHMRC Ethics Award in 2021. His major research interests are supportive care in cancer, psycho-oncology and bioethics. He has published over 350 papers, 28 book chapters and 4 books. He has chaired the Medical Oncology Group of Australia and received their Cancer Achievement Award in 2008 and the Tom Reeve award of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia in 2019. He currently Chairs the Sax Institute Board and AYA Advisory Board of Canteen. He received Membership of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2011 “For service to medical oncology as a clinician, researcher, administrator and mentor, and to the community through leadership roles with cancer control organizations.”
