ISOO-MASCC-ASCO Guideline: Osteoradionecrosis in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Treated With Radiation Therapy

ISOO, MASCC and ASCO have released a new joint guideline for the prevention and management of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw secondary to head and neck radiation therapy in patients with cancer. This guideline was created by a multidisciplinary expert panel who evaluated evidence from randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews.

Evidence-based recommendations with strong evidence to support were possible with regards to best practices in prevention and surgical management of ORN; however no recommendations were possible for the utilization of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin or photobiomodulation. The use of hyperbaric oxygen in prevention and management of ORN remains largely unjustified, with limited evidence to support its practice.
