Dr Mellar Davis
Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award (MASCC’s highest honor) recognizes meritorious service, exemplary leadership and outstanding contribution to the society and its mission. This year’s award goes to Dr Mellar Davis, a long-standing active member of MASCC who has served twice on the MASCC board. Dr Davis is currently the chair of the Cancer Pain Subgroup, and formerly led the Palliative Care Study Group from 2008 – 2014. As well as serving as an editorial consultant for Supportive Care in Cancer from 2007 on, Dr Davis has also chaired sessions, organized workshops, and participated in virtually every MASCC meeting since 2004. Oncodermatology Study Group
Outstanding Study Group Award
The Outstanding Study Group Award recognizes a study group’s excellence and achievement in promoting, activating, and executing activity within the study group. This year’s award goes to the Oncodermatology Study Group, who (among other accomplishments) have published new guidelines on the prevention and management of acute radiation dermatitis alongside a number of supporting publications. Dr Julie Ryan Wolf
Outstanding Study Group Leader Award
The Outstanding Study Group Leader Award recognizes the efforts of the principal driver of the main project that led to the Outstanding Study Group’s recognition and award. This year’s award goes to Dr Julie Ryan Wolf, Chair of the Oncodermatology Study Group. Dr Ryan Wolf is a tenured Associate Professor of Dermatology and Radiation Oncology and a clinical research scientist with a multidisciplinary interface of dermatology, oncology, and health outcomes research. Congratulations to Dr Ryan Wolf on her outstanding leadership!
MASCC Merit-Based Awards
Dr Hannah Wardill
Emerging Investigator Award
The Emerging Investigator Award recognizes an early-to-mid career researcher who has contributed significantly to MASCC-led research activities within the past two years. This year’s award goes to Dr Hannah Wardill, MASCC Board Member and Chair of the Patient Partnership Committee. In this role, Dr Wardill led the development of MASCC’s first framework for effective engagement with patient partners, which was published in Supportive Care in Cancer and represents a key step forward in MASCC’s work towards an inclusive and strategic partnership with patients and advocacy organizations. Additionally, in her role as Vice-Chair of the Mucositis Study Group, Dr Wardill has contributed to the creation of multiple projects including webinars and review papers. She is a Hospital Research Fellow and Head of the Supportive Oncology Research Group at the University of Adelaide and South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.
Ms Tara Behroozian
Guideline Leadership Award
The Guideline Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has contributed substantially to MASCC guidelines within the past two years. This year’s award goes to Ms Tara Behroozian, who led the Oncodermatology Study Group in the creation of MASCC guidelines on the prevention and management of acute radiation dermatitis. Ms Behroozian showed exceptional leadership, commitment and passion in every stage of the process, from conceptualizing the guidelines, designing the methodology, analyzing the results, and writing, editing and revising the final papers. Both papers which comprise these guidelines were accepted for publication in high-impact journals and will inform the approach to radiation dermatitis for all healthcare professionals involved in its prevention and management. Notably, the project also led to the publication of seven meta-analysis papers which were published separately in Supportive Care in Cancer. A medical student at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University (Canada), Ms Behroozian is a talented emerging researcher.
Prof Alexandre Chan
Innovator Award
The Innovator Award recognizes an individual with novel, bold thinking and impactful, non-traditional, out of the box idea(s) that have changed or enhanced direction, practices, and services in supportive cancer care within the past two years. This year’s award goes to Prof Alexandre Chan for his work developing and implementing two innovative supportive care programs at two major cancer centers within the past two years. In Singapore, Prof Chan pioneered the Accessible Cancer Care to Enable Support for Cancer Survivors (ACCESS) program at the National Cancer Centre. This program includes timely identification of survivors with high care needs, inclusive screening procedures with multilingual support, and improved access to tertiary and community support services. Such a survivorship care model is unique and not seen at other institutions in Asia. In the United States, Prof Chan also pioneered the PROMIS program, which integrates real-time analytics of PROs into personalized pharmacy education among ethnic minority patients who are newly diagnosed and undergoing anticancer treatment at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in California. Prof Chan is a Chair and Professor in Clinical Pharmacy at University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is also appointed as a Visiting Professor at the National Cancer Center Singapore.
Prof Raymond Chan
Outstanding Publication Award
The Outstanding Publication Award recognizes an individual who is the first author on an original article in a leading academic journal on a topic related to supportive cancer care within the past year. This year’s award goes to Prof Raymond Chan as first and senior author on the article “Patient navigation across the cancer care continuum: An overview of systematic reviews and emerging literature“. Prof Chan led an interdisciplinary team of experts in the creation of this world-first article summarizing and harmonizing the existing reviews and emerging literature on this topic, including 61 systematic reviews and an additional 53 primary studies. The paper was published in one of the top-ranked journals in cancer medicine, and has already been used by Cancer Australia to inform the Australian Cancer Plan. Furthermore, on the basis of this research, Novartis has provided a grant to MASCC and Prof Chan to lead a global research project on patient navigation. Prof Chan is the Dean (Research), Caring Futures Institute Director and Matthew Flinders Professor of Cancer Nursing at Flinders University. He is currently an Executive Member of the MASCC Board (Secretary); and the Survivorship Study Group Chair.

Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award
The Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award recognizes excellent scientific achievement in the field of supportive care in cancer by an individual MASCC member. The honor is awarded to the author of the highest-ranking abstract submitted to the Annual Meeting. This year’s award goes to Dr Edward Chow, a professor in department of radiation oncology at University of Toronto.

Outstanding Young Investigator Award
The Outstanding Young Investigator Award is awarded to the junior investigator with the highest-ranked abstract submitted for a Young Investigator Award. This year’s award goes to Dr Navin Wewala, a consultant medical oncologist at Palmerston North Hospital, New Zealand. Dr Wewala has interests designing clinical trials, including supportive care trials, and he is the primary site investigator for a number of collaborative oncology trials being conducted at Palmerston North Hospital.

Dr Yu Ke
Young Investigator Award
Young Investigator Awards are open to all junior investigators who have submitted an abstract to an upcoming Annual Meeting, and are awarded to the first authors of the top five abstracts submitted. One of this year’s recipients is Dr Yu Ke. Dr Ke is a pharmacist by training who obtained her PhD at the National University of Singapore this year with the Department of Pharmacy. Her research interests are health services research and implementation science. She works extensively with healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines in both tertiary and community settings to improve cancer survivorship and supportive care delivery.

One of this year’s recipients is Mr Ainsley Ryan Yan Bin Lee, a Final Year Medical Student at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. His research focuses mainly on clinical oncology and the psychosocial care of oncological patients.

Young Investigator Awards are open to all junior investigators who have submitted an abstract to an upcoming Annual Meeting, and are awarded to the first authors of the top five abstracts submitted. One of this year’s recipients is Lisa-Marie Smale, a PharmD (summa cum laude, University of Groningen), who is currently finalizing her PhD at the Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Her PhD research focuses on establishing sustainable use of oral anticancer drugs by designing, implementing and evaluating innovative approaches to minimize drug waste. She set up world’s first ‘reuse’-program for drugs, achieving significant societal impact through obtained cost-savings.

AICSO-MASCC Young Investigator Awards recognize junior investigators associated with a Portuguese institution. This year’s recipient is Dr Maria Teresa Neves. Dr Neves received her Masters Degree in Medicine at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa and her Post-graduation in Pain, at Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Institute of Health Sciences. She completed a Specialization Residency in Medical Oncology, Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental.

One of this year’s recipients is Dr Khawaja Shehryar Nasir. Dr Nasir received his Master of Science in Oral Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a two-year fellowship in teaching and research in the department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, School of Dental Medicine, State University of New York at Buffalo, and a two-year, hospital-based Orofacial Pain residency program from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, Boston. Currently, he works as an Orofacial Pain consultant at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Lahore, Pakistan.

One of this year’s recipients is Mrs Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, an Oncology Nurse Specialist, a public health practitioner and the Registry Manager of the Accra Cancer Registry. Mrs Ohene Oti is also the Head of Nursing at the National Radiotherapy, Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and a fellow of the West African College of Nursing. She serves as an external oncology nursing expert for the Kumasi Cancer City Challenge, past Vice President for Nursing of the African Organization for Research and Treatment in Cancer (AORTIC) and the Regional Ambassador for Africa for the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC).
